CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Rei Ayanami (II)
• Character Age: 14
• Character Canon: Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV anime)
• Canon Point: Immediately post-death; episode 23 (1996)

• Character History: wiki link. Content warnings for discussions of child abuse, child death, suicidal ideation, accidental non-consensual viewing of nudity (mentioned briefly in the text but with no pictures and contained entirely within the "living conditions" subheading).

The sections beginning with "Rebuild of Evangelion" and below are not necessary to read for the purpose of understanding Rei's background as she appears in the 1996 anime.

• Character Personality:

— Curious: Rei is somewhat curious about the world around her, but she is predominantly curious about herself. Rei is aware of her status as a being that was created, not born, and she is consequently aware that she is different from others. Beyond that, Rei does not know a lot about herself, but she expresses a deep desire to learn: midway through the series, we hear Rei give a monologue, in which she asks "who are you?" and "who am I?" over and over again. Her quest to understand who she is, as a person, was tragically cut short in the Evangelion television series, but it's something she'll likely continue to pursue in-game. Additionally, Rei takes some interest in academic matters - she's shown to be a fan of reading very complicated texts - and she's skilled at using her perceptive abilities. Rei does not say a lot, but she watches, listens, and reads.
— Loyal: Despite her isolated upbringing and introverted tendencies, Rei is capable of forming bonds with others, and she treasures the bonds she does form deeply. Initially, this is exploited as a means to further abuse her: at the beginning of the series, Rei cares deeply for Gendo Ikari, a man who saved her life, but who also consistently endangers, neglects, and abuses her. She goes so far as to defend him to Shinji when Shinji criticizes him. Later, by the end of the series, these loyalties are reversed: Rei cares for Shinji, the first person to treat her like a person and a friend, to the point where she sacrifices her life to save his, while admitting she doesn't really know Gendo at all.
— Brave: Rei may be brave by necessity rather than choice, but it's bravery all the same. As a teenager, she pilots an unstable piece of metaphysical machinery, imbued with the soul of a deceased version of herself, to fight massive monsters. Unlike Shinji, her conviction to fighting these beings does not waver during the show, and ultimately, she sacrifices her own life to win a battle with one of them. Part of Rei's bravery is rooted in how cheaply NERV values her life - fighting the Angels, she believes, is the reason for her existence, and she views her potential death as no great loss. Still, her unflinching ability to do this does speak to a quiet, inner reserve of bravery.

— Passive: Throughout the anime, Rei consistently follows orders, even at great personal cost. When she believes she is not needed, she relegates herself to the background. This, like many of Rei's negative traits, stems from her status as one of NERV's experiments: Rei is a clone, and can therefore be replaced at any time. Rei is therefore utterly dependent on NERV for survival, but Rei is not essential to NERV - they can replace her at any time. Rei, therefore, is forced to maintain her usefulness, and needs to appear just as functional as the machine she pilots. Consequently, Rei is most deferential to NERV employees, but tends to stand up for herself a little more when she is with her peers.
— Isolated: Rei was "born" in a lab, "raised" in a lab, and when it became time for her to attend school for the purposes of NERV's mission, was given a decrepit one-bedroom apartment where she lives alone. Altogether, Rei has not been exposed to much human company, and therefore, considers her extreme isolation and neglect a normal baseline. Her isolated upbringing, compounded with her existential problems, causes Rei to feel isolated from other humans, but she also regards this isolation as normal and appropriate for someone like her. Consequently, Rei is extremely introverted, and does not tend to initiate conversation with others.
— Melancholy: Rei knows she is different from others, and she knows that this difference causes her great pain and loneliness. However, Rei does not fully understand why. This is the unfortunate flipside to Rei's curiosity - Rei's lack of knowledge about herself, besides her status as a replaceable clone, is very distressing to her. Coupled with the loneliness that she experiences, but does not know how to name, Rei is prone to deep sadness and depression. At best, this causes Rei to further hold herself apart from others. At worst, Rei will express a desire to return to nothingness. Rei's terrible apartment does a lot of her character work in this regard: it's a dark, filthy place containing virtually no possessions, and at no point does it occur to Rei to open the blinds or clear out the trash. That's how she's always lived.

Despite all this, however, it's worth noting that by her canon point, Rei has grown to care for others. Shinji Ikari is important enough to her that she sacrifices her life to save his own. She hesitates hurting Toji, one of her classmates, even when ordered to do so. And, not long before her death, she attempts to reach out to Asuka, a person she's spent most of the series disliking. Evangelion is a show about the self-actualization that happens when we form bonds with others, and Rei's character is no exception. It'll be something she likely continues to experience in the town of Milton.

• Character Skills:

• Pilot: Much of Rei's concrete skills in the anime relate to her ability to pilot her Evangelion, a large, mecha-style machine. While there are no evangelions in Milton, skills like driving, shooting a gun, steering a boat, or operating other machinery are likely transferable and will come more naturally to her than other people her age.
• Basic wound care
• Basic house cleaning
• In general, Rei is intelligent and willing to follow directions, and would be able to learn many skills that are asked of her.

• Character Inventory:

— ITEM ONE: A pair of broken glasses
— ITEM TWO: A roll of bandages
— ITEM THREE: A copy of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein

• Important Notes: Rei is a clone created from the salvaged remains of Yui Ikari (who provides her physical DNA) and Lilith, a powerful extraterrestrial being and the original creator of humanity (who provides her soul). As a so-called "Seed of Life" housed in a human body, Rei is presumably capable of generating a powerful A.T. field, which is essentially a force field that can separate Rei from others. Due to the depowered nature of characters in the game, Rei will not be able to manipulate her A.T. field, nor will it be stronger than that of an average human. Additionally, since the technology to clone Rei is not present in-game, once she's dead, she's perma-dead, which will be a substantial shock to her worldview.
